GI Joe History

In the past 45 years the soldier GI Joe has been a toy, written about in comic books, made into a cartoon, and a number of action packed video games. He has also been on the big screen in the action packed film, GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

With no real toy doll for boys in the 60″s, Hasbro began the process to develop a soldier patterned after the military characters in the 1945 film called The Story of GI Joe. The term GI Joe comes from World War II where military servicemen were referred to as “Government Issue Joe.”

In the late 60″s GI Joe became a great success for Hasbro. As a result they developed GI Joe further and came out with GI Joe as a deep sea diver, an astronaut, and Green Beret. In the 70′s the toy was redesigned as the Adventures of GI Joe. They want the toy to be more life like and have movable parts along with lifelike hair. They also wanted him to be able to hold onto items through a “kung-fu” grip. In 1976 with all the news about space travel Hasbro marketed their space-traveling “Super Joe.”

Due to a poor reception of GI Joe in the 70′s Hasbro actually retired GI Joe from the market. Then around 1982 with the action pack Star Wars movie there was a rekindling by American for action figures. So Hasbro decided to bring GI Joe back to the market as a scaled down action figure. So what they did was to introduce an entire company of GI Joes that included Scarlett and Snakes Eyes as while as Duke. The Joes also were introduced to a new terrorist Cobra organization that was determined to rule the world.

These and other characters were introduced in the 80′s TV cartoon, GI Joe: A Real American Hero. In addition, GI Joe was marketed in video games by Atari and Commodore and there was a comic book series published by Marvel from 1982 to 1994. The there was the animated film GI Joe: The Movie that also was turned into a video game in 1987.

Other GI Joe action figures were marketed in the early 1990′s and then again in 2004. Perhaps the most unique character of GI Joe has been his staying power over the past 45 years. A big boost for GI Joe came in the release of the movie GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The movie brought to life the characters Duke, Snake Eyes, Storm Shadows, and Cobra Commander. The Cobra Organization were the enemy in the movie and the GI Joe team of Duke and Snake Eyes battled Storm Shadow and Cobra Commander.

Snake Eyes

Snake Eyes is a member of the GI Joe Team and is a former member of the U.S. Army Special Forces Delta Operative.  He has been trained as a Drill Sergeant and he has archived the rank of  U.S. Army Sergeant First Class. To maintain his identity his personal information like his name, birth place, and other important information is classified.  We really do not know much about his past.

When Hasbro Toys made public his action figure they called him Commando.  Then in 1984 the Marvel Comics referred to him as the Ninja Master in his ninja uniform.

Snake Eyes is highly skilled in the use of weapons such as firearms, ninja swords, and explosives.  But he is talented in multiple forms of martial arts which makes him a deadly master and most dangerous.  He is also well known for his expert use of the Ninjato and Trench Knives. He has mastered stealth movements allowing him to approach quietly.

The GI Joe Costume is the only way to go this Halloween!
